Opening Narrative

A young cowherd named Niulang discovered the heavenly weaver girl Zhinu bathing in a river, fell in love, and married her. But Zhinu's mother, the Queen Mother of Heaven, separated the pair with the Milky Way, the silver river of stars. Once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh month, magpies form a bridge across the sky so the lovers can reunite. The night is Qixi — the festival that became China's Valentine's Day.
