The year-season customs are ancient; the name Spring festival is comparatively recent. Most of what people mean by the festival has been practised for far longer than it has been called by that word.

Qingming is the only major Chinese festival fixed by the sun rather than the moon, falling fifteen days after the spring equinox around April 4 or 5. It absorbed three older observances: the Hanshi cold-food fast honoring the self-sacrificing noble Jie Zitui, the Shangsi riverside purification picnic, and the solar-term tomb-sweeping duty itself.
Song-dynasty scroll painting froze its street life forever in Along the River During Qingming, and the state made it a statutory holiday in 2008 after listing tomb-sweeping customs among the first national intangible heritage items in 2006. Online memorial platforms and sea burials now extend the same remembrance duty to diaspora families.
Cultural Traditions
-
Tomb Sweeping
Families clear weeds from graves, renew the soil mound, burn spirit money, and arrange offerings of fruit, tea, and the deceased's favorite dishes.
-
Spring Outings
Taqing strolls follow the sweep, since the same early-April days bring plum blossom and new grass; kite flying and willow-branch wearing complete the airing-out of winter.
-
Cold Food Echoes
Shanxi villages still bake jiezitui steamed buns shaped like swallows, a direct culinary fossil of the Hanshi fast merged into the solar-term calendar.
Common Questions
Why does Qingming fall on almost the same Gregorian date every year?
Because it is defined by the sun's ecliptic longitude, not the lunar phase, landing within a one-day window around April 5 each year.
Are Qingming and Hanshi the same thing?
They merged centuries ago; Hanshi's cold-food ban originally preceded Qingming by a day or two until the two observances collapsed into one holiday.
What do people eat at Qingming?
Green qingtuan dumplings dyed with mugwort juice in Jiangnan, cold noodles in the north, and region-specific baked cakes descended from the cold-food menu.
